Setting the scene: stroke incidence in Europe
The AI-SPRINT personalised healthcare webinar is the first one of a series of events that aims to present the different use cases developed by the project team. This webinar was opened by Arlene Wilkie, General Direct at Stroke Alliance for Europe - SAFE, who provided a clear overview of what is the stroke, what can cause it and its incidence in Europe. Arlene also provided information on the economic and social impact and how Covid-19 had a major influence on the capacity of health systems, causing disruption also to stroke patients. She concluded her presentation showing a series of recommendations on stroke prevention and how the Stroke Action Plan for Europe can play a key role in supporting it.
AI-SPRINT Personalised Healthcare use case
Davide Cirillo, Postdoctoral Researcher at Barcelona Supercomputing Center, followed the presentation introducing the AI-SPRINT Personalised Healthcare Use Case, that exploits the potential offered by the edge-cloud environment to develop innovative and impactful clinical applications for stroke prevention. The use case benefits from incorporating wearable technology into healthcare, such as continuous data acquisition and low patient burden. This novel approach will be tested over the next few years, collecting different kinds of information and combining quantitative and qualitative data per patient while preserving both privacy and security of the people concerned.
A real-life experience from a stroke incidence
The webinar continued showing a live video released by Julio Agredano, CEO and Founder at Fundación Freno al ICTUS and ex-stroke patient. With his short real-life experience Julio highlighted the importance of adopting preventive actions to reduce the probability of this devastating disease to happen.
Roundtable and Q&A
The webinar was followed by an interesting panel discussion, moderated by Stephanie Parker, Senior Research Analyst at Trust-IT Services, that brought together external and internal partners: Davide Cirillo, Postdoctoral Researcher at Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Enara Herran Martinez, International R&D Project Collaborator at Fundación Freno al ICTUS, and María Alonso de Leciñana, Stroke Neurologist at “La Paz” University Hospital
During the session, participants got the chance to hear in a dedicated panel discussion real world experience and insights about how Artificial Intelligence models can be applied to patient stratification, how AI can contribute to progress on innovative technologies designed for stroke patients as well as improving the patient monitoring, and enhancing the detection and management of risk factors. In particular, their discussions highlighted that:
- there is a strong need to develop trustable intelligence systems to realise a truly personalised healthcare approach;
- many different actors (clinicians, researchers, technologists, governments and funders) need to work together in order to provide better healthcare pathways thanks to trustworthy AI technologies;
- from the patients point of view, it is very important to include them since the beginning of AI projects as a sort of validators for the development phases of these technologies.
Participants and Poll Questions
The webinar attracted a total of 47 participants, from 15 countries.
The interactive features included live polling with the audience to better understand their familiarity with emerging technologies such as AI, ML, HPC applied to healthcare. The following graphs show the main findings and takeaways from the short surveys:
