Digital Autonomy in the Computing Continuum

The European Commission and EU-IoT are organising a workshop on Computing Continuum to share the current work on domains of connectivity and infrastructure, with a particular focus on the programming environments and the role played by Artificial Intelligence. Several parallel sessions are going to be presented, focused on Cognitive CloudOpen Source for Digital AutonomyDecentralising Intelligence and Swarm ComputingShaping the Cloud-Edge-IoT Work Programme for 2023-2024, and the Cloud Alliance Roadmap with contributions from AIoTIGAIA-XHIPEAC, NESSI, KDT, Cloud CEO roundtable and IPCEI.

Danilo Ardagna, Scientific Coordinator of AI-SPRINT, is one of the speakers of the Cognitive Cloud session. The objective of the session is to discuss the existing work conducted in the area and identify key challenges and priorities for research in the context of the call and of the future research programmes. Danilo's presentation, entitled AI-SPRINT: Future challenges of the Cognitive Cloud, provides an overview of the objectives, challenges and solutions provided by the project.

Agenda

Session 1: Cognitive Cloud

This session addresses the theme on “Cognitive Cloud: AI-enabled computing continuum from Cloud to Edge” of the second Call under Horizon Europe Cluster 4: World Leading Data and Computing Technologies. The objective is to discuss existing work and to identify key challenges and priorities for research in the context of the call and of future research programmes.

Session 2: Open Source for Digital Autonomy

In the context of the second Call under Horizon Europe Cluster 4: World Leading Data and Computing Technologies, this session addresses the role of open-source software and hardware in a Computing Continuum that will support Europe’s digital autonomy, in alignment with Thomas Skordas’ comments at the ICT directors’ meeting on 7 October 2021.

Session 3: Decentralising Intelligence and Swarm Computing

This session complements addresses the theme on “Programming tools for decentralised intelligence and swarms” of the second Call under Horizon Europe. The objective is to discuss existing efforts and to identify key priorities for research in this area.

Session 4: Shaping the Cloud-Edge-IoT Work Programme for 2023-2024

The aim of the session is to gather selected high-level experts in data, cloud, electronic components and systems, as well as stakeholders from relevant verticals and associations to exchange views on a strategic European vision for the Computing Continuum.

Closing session

Wrap-up session from two of our Heads of Units with practical information for participants on emerging opportunities in EU programmes and the next steps.
